China growth, margin questions
- Q1 2026 revenue grew 34.2% year over year, led by a sharp jump in ECP and furnace tools.
- ECP, furnace, and other technologies rose 204.9% year over year and reached 36.4% of Q1 2026 revenue.
- Gross margin was 46.4% in Q1 2026, down from 47.9% a year earlier as the product mix changed.
- ACMR now owns 73.6% of ACM Shanghai, so more of the China profit pool goes to outside holders.
- The 2026 revenue guide of $1.08 billion to $1.175 billion is the main test for the bull case.
Fast growth with strings attached
ACM Research is trying to become more than a wet-cleaning tool maker. Q1 2026 helped that story. Revenue grew 34.2% year over year, and the ECP, furnace, and other technologies group grew 204.9%. That shows customers are buying more than the core cleaning tools.
The bull case is simple. Mainland China still needs local chip equipment suppliers, and ACMR has a strong base there. Its China subsidiary, ACM Shanghai, also has a large cash base after recent share sales, which can fund research, new factories, and more product launches.
The bear case is just as clear. Gross margin fell to 46.4% in Q1 2026 from 47.9% a year earlier because the revenue mix changed. Newer products may carry lower margins than the older cleaning business. On top of that, ACMR owns only 73.6% of ACM Shanghai after another share sale, so some of the growth now belongs to non-controlling investors.
Finn's view is mixed. The business is performing well, but the stock still depends on strong 2026 execution, margin stability, and a trade backdrop that does not get worse.
Selling tools to chip fabs
ACMR makes wafer fab equipment, often called WFE. These are machines used inside chip factories to clean, plate, heat, coat, and process silicon wafers while chips are being made.
Most revenue comes from selling equipment directly to chipmakers and packaging customers. The company also earns smaller recurring revenue from services, spare parts, and consumables. The main market is still Mainland China.
Management wants ACMR to become a multi-product global supplier. It raised its long-term revenue goal to $4 billion, with $2.5 billion targeted from Mainland China and $1.5 billion from the rest of the world.
There is a catch in the structure. ACMR has repeatedly sold shares of ACM Shanghai to fund growth. That brings in cash, but it also lowers the parent company's ownership and shifts more future profit to outside shareholders.
From cleaning to more process steps
Single-wafer cleaning
This is the core business. ACMR's SAPS and TEBO cleaning tools help remove tiny particles and films from wafers during chipmaking.
Tahoe and SPM cleaning
Tahoe and high-temperature SPM cleaning are near-term growth drivers inside the cleaning family. They matter because customers can buy them without ACMR needing to win a totally new process area.
ECP and furnace tools
ECP means electro-chemical plating, a way to deposit metal layers. Furnace tools use heat for steps like anneal, LPCVD, oxidation, and ALD, and this group was the biggest growth story in Q1 2026.
Advanced packaging tools
This group includes coaters, developers, scrubbers, and wet etchers for wafer and panel-level packaging. It is smaller than cleaning and ECP, but it is growing from a low base.
PECVD, Track, and CO2 dry cleaning
These are emerging products now in customer evaluation. They could add revenue in 2026 and beyond, but they are not yet the main growth drivers.
Q1 mix shifted hard
The segment mix uses Q1 2026 product revenue. Mainland China remains the main geography, and a small group of large chip customers still matters a lot.
What could break the thesis
Export controls hit the supply chain
High impact · High oddsACM Shanghai and ACM Korea were added to the U.S. Department of Commerce Entity List in December 2024. Management has said this will make it difficult, if not impossible, to get U.S. components, though it believes the impact is manageable because of local sourcing work. If key parts cannot be replaced, shipments and margins could suffer.
Tariffs spread to chip equipment
High impact · Medium oddsThe U.S. has reciprocal tariffs on Chinese goods of up to 125%, while semiconductors and related equipment are currently exempt. A Section 232 investigation into semiconductor equipment began in April 2025. A bad ruling could raise costs or disrupt cross-border equipment flows.
New products lower margins
Medium impact · High oddsThe fastest-growing products may not match the margin profile of legacy cleaning tools. Q1 2026 gross margin was 46.4%, down from 47.9% a year earlier, and management says gross margin may sit between 42.0% and 48.0% for the foreseeable future. Growth that comes with lower margins would weaken earnings quality.
Parent shareholders get diluted economics
Medium impact · Medium oddsACMR sold more shares of ACM Shanghai in February 2026 and its ownership fell to 73.6%. The cash helps fund growth, but each sale means outside holders get a larger share of subsidiary income. More sales could make revenue growth look better than per-share economics.
Customers delay first-tool adoption
Medium impact · Medium oddsThe long-term plan depends on customers qualifying newer products such as PECVD, Track, and panel-level tools. Qualification means a customer tests a tool before ordering it in volume. If first tools do not turn into repeat orders, the $4 billion long-term target becomes harder to believe.
In one breath
What does ACM Research do?
ACM Research makes equipment used in chip factories. Its main products clean wafers, plate metals, heat wafers in furnaces, and support advanced chip packaging.
Why is Mainland China so important to ACMR?
Most of ACMR's revenue comes from Mainland China customers. That market funds its product expansion, but it also makes the company highly exposed to U.S. export controls, tariffs, and China chip spending cycles.
Why does ACMR's ACM Shanghai ownership matter?
ACM Shanghai is the key operating subsidiary behind much of the China business. ACMR owned 73.6% after the February 2026 share sale, so a growing part of the subsidiary's profit belongs to outside investors.
What is the main thing to watch in 2026?
The main test is whether ACMR can hit its $1.08 billion to $1.175 billion revenue guide while keeping gross margin from sliding. The mix of ECP, furnace, Tahoe, PECVD, and Track tools will be central.
