AI PCs help, but pull-forward clouds H2

01 Running thesis

AI refresh meets a timing problem

CNXN has a real growth tailwind from the AI PC refresh cycle. In Q1 2026, almost 70% of endpoint devices bought by customers had AI chips, compared with less than 40% a year before. Copilot adoption also grew at a triple-digit rate, which suggests the software side of the AI shift is becoming more than a sales pitch.

The commercial engine is doing the heavy lifting. Enterprise Solutions grew 16.3% year over year in Q1 2026, and Business Solutions grew 6.6%. That helped offset a sharp Public Sector decline caused by non-repeating federal orders, not a clear collapse in basic demand.

The hard part is timing. Management said Q1 included a low-to-mid single-digit pull-forward of demand as customers tried to buy before memory prices rose. That helped backlog, but it may leave a hole later in 2026 if IT budgets were spent early.

Finn's view is balanced rather than excited. Financial health looks better than growth or valuation, so the stock needs proof that AI PC demand is durable and that margins can hold after the Q1 pull-forward fades.

Apr 2026Q1 2026 clarified the Public Sector drop as mostly a nonrecurring federal order issue. The same call added a new H2 risk because some Q1 demand was pulled forward ahead of memory price hikes.
Apr 2026The Q1 2026 filing showed Enterprise sales up 16.3% and Business Solutions up 6.6%. Public Sector sales fell 31.0%, keeping the overall story mixed.
Feb 2026The 2025 10-K confirmed a resilient commercial business and a weak Public Sector segment. Consolidated gross margin rose 20 basis points to 18.8%, helped by software sales recognized on a net basis.
Oct 2025Q3 2025 showed a sharper Public Sector decline of 24.3%, which pulled total revenue down 2.2%. A higher software mix lifted gross margin to 19.6%, partly offsetting the sales concern.
Jul 2025Q2 2025 kept the commercial recovery alive, with Enterprise up 9.1% and Business up 5.4%. Public Sector weakened again, and reduced software agency fees kept margin pressure in focus.
Apr 2025Q1 2025 brought a return to strong revenue growth, with net sales up 10.9%. The growth came with lower gross margin, so the quality of the rebound stayed in question.
Feb 2025The 2024 10-K showed lower revenue but better gross margin. CNXN also made AI services through CNXN Helix a more visible part of the story.
Oct 2024Q3 2024 weakened the prior margin case as gross margin compressed to 18.7%. Segment results became more volatile, with Public Sector rebounding while Business Solutions declined.
02 Business model

A neutral IT shopping desk

CNXN makes money by selling IT products and services. It works with more than 2,500 suppliers, including Apple, Cisco, Dell, HP, and Microsoft. Because it is product-neutral, it can mix hardware, software, and services from many vendors for each customer.

The core sale is simple: a business, school, or agency needs notebooks, desktops, software, networking gear, or support. CNXN sources those products, helps pick the right setup, and may add services through its Technology Solutions Organization and integration center.

The higher-margin opportunity is services and software. Some software sales are recognized on a net basis, meaning CNXN records only the fee as revenue but at 100% gross margin. That can lift reported gross margin even when hardware units are under pressure.

The model can break if vendors go direct, if price competition squeezes invoice margins, or if customers delay upgrades. The 2026 memory shortage adds a new twist: higher prices can lift revenue per device, but they can also reduce unit demand.

03 Product portfolio

From laptops to AI services

Growth engine

Notebooks and mobility

This was 37% of Q1 2026 net sales. It is the main place where the AI PC refresh is showing up.

Steady

Desktops

Desktops were 12% of Q1 2026 net sales. They still matter for office refresh cycles, but mix and pricing can move margins.

Growth engine

Software

Software was 11% of Q1 2026 net sales. Net-recognized software can boost gross margin because the fee is recorded at 100% gross margin.

Cash cow

Accessories

Accessories were 11% of Q1 2026 net sales. They attach to device sales and help CNXN cover more of each IT order.

Steady

Networking and communications

Net/com products were 7% of Q1 2026 net sales. Demand can vary with larger technology projects and customer budgets.

Option

Servers, storage, and services

Servers and storage were 6% of Q1 2026 net sales, while other hardware and services were 8%. CNXN Helix and AI services give this area a longer-term growth angle.

04 Business segments

Commercial strength, public drag

Enterprise Solutions48%growing fast
Business Solutions38%modest
Public Sector Solutions14%declining

Segment mix is from the three months ended March 31, 2026. The Public Sector share was unusually low because several large federal orders from the prior year did not repeat.

05 Risk factors

What could break the case

H2 demand air pocket

High impact · Medium odds

Q1 2026 benefited from customers buying early before memory prices rose. If those orders came out of fixed annual IT budgets, Q3 and Q4 revenue could soften. Management already warned that the back half of the year may see some softening.

We watchQ3 and Q4 2026 revenue growth, backlog conversion, and management comments on budget exhaustion.

Business Solutions margin squeeze

Medium impact · Medium odds

Business Solutions has the highest segment gross margin, but its Q1 2026 gross margin fell 80 basis points to 24.5%. Management tied the drop to unfavorable customer mix in notebooks, mobility, and desktops. If that mix does not reverse, profit growth could lag sales growth.

We watchBusiness Solutions gross margin and the stated mix impact in notebooks, mobility, and desktops.

Public Sector lumpiness

Medium impact · High odds

Public Sector sales fell 31.0% in Q1 2026, with federal government sales down 72.9%. Management says this was mostly a tough comparison from large orders last year, and that underlying performance is stable. That explanation needs proof because government and education buying can be lumpy.

We watchPublic Sector sales growth and federal government order activity through the rest of 2026.

Memory inflation hurts units

Medium impact · Medium odds

A global DRAM and NAND shortage is expected in 2026. Higher memory prices can raise revenue per device, but they can also push customers to buy fewer units. If unit declines outrun price gains, the AI PC refresh could look weaker than expected.

We watchUnit trends in notebooks and desktops versus average selling price gains.

Vendor and price pressure

Medium impact · Medium odds

CNXN depends on major technology vendors and competes in a price-sensitive resale market. If a large vendor changes terms, pushes more sales direct, or if rivals cut prices, CNXN's invoice margins can fall. Product-neutral advice helps, but it does not remove this risk.

We watchGross margin by segment, vendor program changes, and comments on price competition.
06 Quick answers

In one breath

What does PC Connection actually do?

PC Connection is an IT reseller and solutions provider. It helps organizations buy and manage hardware, software, and services from many technology vendors.

Why is AI important for CNXN?

AI is pushing customers to refresh PCs sooner because newer devices have AI-ready chips. In Q1 2026, nearly 70% of endpoint devices sold by CNXN were AI chip-enabled.

Why did Public Sector revenue fall so much?

Public Sector sales fell because a few large federal orders from the prior year did not repeat. Management said the underlying business is stable and should improve through the rest of 2026.

What is the biggest near-term risk?

The biggest near-term risk is that Q1 orders were pulled forward from later in the year. If customers bought early to avoid memory price hikes, H2 2026 could be softer.
