Growth is back, margins are the test
- Organic ASV, a measure of yearly subscription value, grew 7.1% in Q3 FY2026.
- The Americas is the core region, representing 65% of ASV as of May 31, 2026.
- EMEA improved to 5.6% organic ASV growth after lagging earlier in the year.
- GAAP operating margin fell to 26.7% from 33.2% a year earlier.
- FactSet is pushing AI tools, but the cost of that push is now visible.
Faster ASV, weaker margins
FactSet looks healthier on growth than it did a few quarters ago. Organic ASV, which is the annual value of current subscriptions, rose 7.1% in Q3 FY2026 to $2,485.6 million. That marked the fifth straight quarter of faster growth. The gains came mainly from data solutions and workstations.
The best bull point is that the growth is not narrow. Americas organic ASV grew 7.2%, Asia Pacific grew 10.0%, and EMEA improved to 5.6% after being a weak spot. FactSet also had more than 9,100 clients, over 247,000 users, and ASV retention above 95% as of May 31, 2026. That makes the subscription base hard to dislodge.
The bear point got stronger too. GAAP operating margin dropped to 26.7% from 33.2% a year earlier. Management tied the drop to higher employee compensation, restructuring charges, and CEO compensation costs. Adjusted margin also fell to 34.0% from 36.8%, so this was not only an accounting issue.
The stock story is now a trade-off. FactSet is proving that it can reaccelerate subscription growth, helped by data products, workstations, and early AI demand. But investors still need proof that the company can invest in AI and sales without letting margins stay stuck below the level the business used to earn.
Sticky subscriptions for Wall Street
FactSet sells subscriptions to financial data, analytics, and software. Clients use it for research, portfolio analysis, trading workflows, wealth tools, market data, and enterprise data feeds. The company tracks the business mainly through ASV because most revenue comes from subscriptions already under contract.
The model works because FactSet sits inside daily work. A portfolio manager, analyst, banker, or wealth advisor can build habits around the data, screens, models, and reports. Once a firm trains people and links FactSet into its systems, switching vendors can be painful.
FactSet also sells the idea of lower total cost. A client may cut smaller tools and move more work onto one FactSet platform. That can help FactSet expand inside existing accounts, but it also means clients will keep pressing for clear savings when budgets get tight.
The weak point is cost. Better AI tools, richer data, cloud hosting, and new software all require spending. In Q3 FY2026, technology expenses included higher cloud hosting, licensed software, and AI token consumption. If that spending rises faster than ASV, the subscription model loses some of its profit power.
Data tools with an AI layer
Workstation and market data
This is the core desktop used by investment professionals for research, screens, market data, and company information. Management said workstations helped drive the Q3 FY2026 ASV increase.
Data solutions
FactSet sells data feeds, cloud delivery, APIs, and specialized data sets to large financial firms. Data solutions were a main driver of organic ASV growth in Q3 FY2026.
Portfolio analytics and trading
These tools help clients measure performance, risk, and trading decisions across portfolios. The LiquidityBook acquisition adds order management and investment book of record tools.
Wealth management
FactSet serves wealth advisors with desktop, reporting, and client workflow tools. User growth in Q3 FY2026 was driven mainly by wealth management users.
FactSet Mercury and Portfolio Manager Hub
Mercury is FactSet's conversational knowledge engine, while Portfolio Manager Hub brings research, analysis, trade simulation, and an AI assistant into one workflow. These are part of the AI push that could lift ASV if clients adopt them.
Pitch Creator and banking AI
Pitch Creator uses generative AI to help banking clients produce pitch materials. As of Q3 FY2025, FactSet reported 10 signed deals and over 45 active trials with large banking clients.
Irwin
Irwin gives FactSet an investor relations and capital markets platform for public companies and advisors. The deal expands FactSet beyond its traditional investment professional base.
Americas still carries the base
The mix uses ASV by geography as disclosed in FactSet's Q3 FY2026 Form 10-Q, as of May 31, 2026. Americas is the largest region, so companywide growth still depends heavily on that market.
What could go wrong
Margin reset becomes permanent
High impact · Medium oddsGAAP operating margin fell to 26.7% in Q3 FY2026 from 33.2% a year earlier. Some costs were tied to restructuring and CEO compensation, but adjusted operating margin also fell to 34.0% from 36.8%. If costs keep rising, faster ASV growth may not turn into better earnings.
AI spending outruns AI revenue
Medium impact · Medium oddsAI is a major part of the product plan, with tools such as FactSet Mercury, Portfolio Manager Hub, Portfolio Assistant, and Pitch Creator. But AI also adds costs, including cloud hosting, licensed software, and AI token consumption. The risk is that clients like the tools but do not pay enough extra for them.
EMEA improvement fades
Medium impact · Medium oddsEMEA organic ASV growth improved to 5.6% in Q3 FY2026 from 4.3% in Q2. That helped weaken a key bear case. If EMEA slips back, FactSet would again depend more on the Americas and Asia Pacific for growth.
Clients push harder on budgets
High impact · Medium oddsFactSet sells into investment firms, banks, wealth managers, hedge funds, and corporate users. A market downturn or tighter client budget cycle can delay new purchases and expansion. FactSet's own FY2025 filing warned that market volatility can delay spending and reduce future ASV growth.
Vendor consolidation cuts both ways
Medium impact · Medium oddsFactSet can win when clients replace many tools with one platform. The same total cost pressure can also hurt if clients decide that a rival platform is good enough or cheaper. Competition stays intense because the product sits in high-value daily workflows.

ASV means Annual Subscription Value. It is FactSet's estimate of the next 12 months of subscription revenue from services already being supplied to clients.
Why did FactSet's margin fall in Q3 FY2026?
GAAP operating margin fell because operating expenses rose. FactSet cited higher employee compensation, one-time restructuring charges, and CEO compensation costs.
Is AI already important to FactSet?
AI is important to the strategy and is being added across products. The open question is whether AI tools add enough ASV to offset higher technology and development costs.
