A better mix, with a price test

TTM is no longer only a plain printed circuit board story. The bull case is that the company is becoming a more specialized electronics supplier. That means more work tied to national defense programs and AI data center hardware, where products are harder to build and can carry better value.

The strongest parts of the story are clear. Aerospace and Defense remains the biggest end market, and management has said more than half of its A&D revenue now comes from engineered and integrated electronic products rather than standard boards. Data Center Computing is also getting a direct lift from generative AI demand.

The bear case is execution and concentration. The Penang, Malaysia plant is ramping slower than hoped. The AI-linked data center business depends on a small group of large customers. Automotive and Medical, Industrial and Instrumentation are still dealing with weak demand and customer inventory adjustments.

02 Business model

Advanced boards for harder jobs

TTM makes printed circuit boards, often called PCBs, which are the physical boards that connect chips and other electronic parts. It also makes radio frequency components, RF subsystems, and engineered electronics used in demanding systems.

The company earns money by building these parts for five end markets: Aerospace and Defense, Data Center Computing, Automotive, Medical, Industrial and Instrumentation, and Networking. The better business comes when TTM does more than build a standard board. Engineered products and advanced boards can be more differentiated.

Two factories matter to the next phase. Penang is meant to give commercial customers a highly automated option outside China, but the ramp has been slower than expected. Syracuse is meant to add domestic ultra-HDI capacity, meaning very dense circuit board technology, for defense needs, with initial low-rate production expected in 2026.

This model breaks if new plants miss cost targets, if AI customers pause orders, or if commercial customers keep cutting inventory. It also has normal manufacturing pressure from labor shortages, supply chain issues, and a company-wide ERP system upgrade.
